Growing up in the mountains of SE Kentucky, Missy was a natural cook from a very early age, having made her first batch of biscuits, without using a recipe, when she was only nine years old. Handed down from generation to generation, the collection of recipes contained within have been learned through the years by watching her Mamaw Ellie, her Mom Annie and aunt Patty cook at the many large family gatherings for holidays and reunions. The Appalachian way, doing it instead of following step-by-step directions on paper, is the way Missy was taught to cook - just taking the simplest ingredients and turning them into the most delicious dishes. While her cousins and sisters were busy playing, Missy would put on one of her Mamaws aprons and help the matriarchs of the family cook everything from Chicken and Dumplings made with fresh chicken straight from the yard to Fried Apple Pies made from just-picked June apples from her Papaw Sizemore’s apple tree! It is Missys desire to continue the tradition of the meals cooked in that small kitchen in Tan Yard Holler and share them with others to enjoy as much as she and family has and still do.
