Discover the latest and most up-to-date adaptation of Epictetuss timeless masterpiece, "Discourses."
This book is a collection of talks given by the Stoic philosopher Epictetus, which were written down by his student Arrian around 108 AD. Originally, there were eight books, but only four have survived. Epictetus’ teachings are very practical. He encouraged his students to pay close attention to their thoughts, worries, emotions, and desires. This was so they could always achieve what they wanted and avoid what they didn’t want. He believed that real education was about understanding what we can control and what we can’t, and learning how to respond properly to what happens around us. His goal was to help people become free and happy.
These teachings have been very influential since they were first written down. Marcus Aurelius, another Stoic philosopher, often mentioned and used quotes from the Discourses. Since the 16th century, the Discourses have been translated into many languages and published many times, showing their lasting impact.
This book is penned with the thinking: "How would Epictetus convey the same insights, yet in the context of todays world, to his student Arrian with modern life examples?"
